As the author put it in his last line the "smell of commercial greed" is in the air and is spreading. It'll mean that residents along this strip (and reaching down through to Hintonburg too) will either be getting less for their money (albeit excellent quality), or will get into their individual modes of transport to shop elsewhere (outside of their residential area) to allow their dollars to stretch a bit more.
We moved into the Hintonburg area because it was cost-effective and everything we needed was at our finger tips. Now our neighbors are moving out because their dollars can do better, and get more in another part of the city.
